2008 DEMOCRATIC NATIONAL CONVENTION

2008 DEMOCRATIC NATIONAL CONVENTION
ARC Sustainability produced the most environmentally sustainable political convention in modern American history. We initiated our comprehensive greening plan a full year before the Convention and incorporated sustainability principles into the planning, event and restoration phases. The greening programs included:

Energy: 100% wind-powered venues, significantly reduced generator use & and ran on biodiesel, temporary solar installation powered the media pavilions; solar array was repurposed for the roof of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers in Denver post DNC. CFL’s were installed in DNCC offices, official venues and headquarters hotel.

Carbon: Comprehensively calculated the carbon footprint of the DNC, a Convention first; GHG emissions reductions, verifiable carbon offset framework, secured sponsorship of first-ever Official Carbon Advisor.

Green Delegate Challenge: Created and managed first-ever program for U.S. state & Territory delegations to compete in offsetting carbon footprint while attending DNC. Results were very successful with 55 out of 56 Delegations participating and 31 delegations reached 100% carbon neutral. Formed partnership with Native Energy and offsets purchased benefited American renewable energy and agricultural & landfill methane capture projects.

Waste: Minimization, resource recovery, recycling, composting, weighing, verification.

Water: Reduced plastic water bottle consumption; bulk-dispensing and water fountains; official venues retrofitted efficient sinks, toilets, urinals & xeriscaping. Official Headquarters hotel banned plastic bottles during DNC and instituted long-term sheet and towel changing policies. Sustainable materials and product sourcing: Construction, production, food & beverage service, office supplies, official providers and sponsors.

Request For Proposals: Sustainability review made on RFPs and contractor & provider selection.

Construction & Production: Sustainable and 80% reusable staging materials, paints, adhesives, wood, stains, lighting, packaging and transport. Construction waste streams of concrete, wood, cardboard and metals recycled. Podium for the 2008 DNC was made of FSC-Certified wood with formaldehyde-free stains, no-VOC paints and stood on recycled and recyclable carpeting.

Transportation: All 250 buses were hybrid, alternative fuel, biodiesel or electric. DNCC fleet was entirely made up of hybrid, E-85 and high fuel efficiency vehicles and all miles were tracked for the carbon footprint calculations. Sixty-seven percent of DNCC staff walked, rode bikes or took public transit to work.

Sustainable Food & Beverage: Locally-grown and organic foods; vegetarian options, organic wine & beer; bulk dispensing, composting & recycling training for catering and venue kitchen crews.

Green Community Service & Education: Local river clean-ups, community-wide tree planting, tree care events and NGO meetings. DNCC website included five educational “Green Screen” videos and dozens of weekly greening tips.
